Dosing
DOSAGE ADMINISTRATION
Oral Administration
The recommended oral adult dose is 60 mL (4 tablespoons) of suspension (15g of resin) given one to four times a day. This should be accompanied by frequent serum potassium determinations. A lower dose of the resin is recommended for children.
Rectal Administration
The suspension may be given as a retention enema but due to less effective potassium exchange, it is recommended that 120 to 180 mL of suspension should be used (30 to 45 g of resin). The suspension should be administered following a cleansing enema. The suspension is administered at body temperature.
Directions
The following steps should be performed for the proper rectal use of the enema bottle.
Shake first the 500ml suspension bottle.
Pour slowly into a disposable enema bottle (120ml) up to the grid mark and then cover tightly with the lubricated tip cap.
Place the capped bottle in warm water five minutes before administration.
Lay the recipient in preferred positions: Lying on left side with knees flexed, or in the knee-chest position. Remove protective cap from a pre-lubricated rectal tube before using.
Shake the bottle and aim the tip of the applicator upward then push the tip into the rectum and slide it gently in about 3 inches.
Slowly squeeze the enema bottle to release the content when the tip has been inserted into the rectum.
Once the enema bottle has been emptied, remove the tip from the rectum and remain in position for 3–5 minutes or until a strong urge to have a bowel movement is felt.
Administer sodium polystyrene sulfonate at least 3 hours before or 3 hours after other oral medications. Patients with gastroparesis may require a 6 hour separation.
