Indication
1. What Macrogol 4000 (10g) is and what it is used for
Macrogol 4000 (10g) contains the active substance Macrogol 4000 (10g) and belongs to a group of medicines called osmotic laxatives. It adds water to the stool, which makes the texture looser and increases stool volume. This helps to overcome problem caused by very slow bowel movements.
Macrogol 4000 (10g) does not enter the bloodstream and does not break down in the body.
Macrogol 4000 (10g) is used for the treatment of constipation in adults and children from 8 years of age.
Dosing
3. How to take Macrogol 4000
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as instructed by the doctor or pharmacist. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults and children over 8 years of age
The recommended dose is one to two sachets daily. Ideally, take the dose as a single dose in the morning.
The daily dose can be adjusted according to the effect obtained and may range from one sachet up to a maximum of two sachets per day.
Dissolve the contents of the sachet in 50 ml of water immediately before use and drink the liquid.
It usually takes 1–2 days for Macrogol 4000 (10g) to take effect.
Continue with a healthy lifestyle and diet to maintain the improvement in the frequency of your bowel movements after treatment with Macrogol 4000.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if: symptoms get worse or don't get better after 14 Days
If you take more Macrogol 4000 (10g) than you should
If you take more macrogol than you should, you may get diarrhoea, stomach ache or vomiting. The diarrhoea usually goes away when treatment is stopped or the dose is reduced.
If you have severe diarrhoea or vomit a lot, you should:
Contact your doctor as soon as possible as you May need treatment so as not to lose salts (electrolytes) due to fluid loss
If you forget to take Macrogol 4000
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
Contraindications
2. What you need to know before you take Macrogol 4000
Do not take Macrogol 4000 (10g) if you are allergic to macrogol (polyethylene glycol) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6 – please refer to the Product Insert/Patient Information Leaflet published on HSA for the full drug information)
if you have a severe intestinal disease such as
inflammatory bowel disease (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease) or abnormal enlargement of the intestine
intestinal perforation (hole in the intestinal wall) or risk of Intestinal perforation
ileus (intestinal obstruction) or suspicion of intestinal obstruction (obstruction or obstruction in the bowel)
painful stomach ailments with no established cause.
Do not take this medicine if any of the above applies to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking the medicine.
