Indication

Indications:
Cyanocobalamin preparations are used in the treatment and prevention of vitamin B12 deficiency.
It is indicated for treatment of pernicious anaemia.

Dosing

Recommended Dosage and Route of Administration
Route of administrations: intramuscular and deep subcutaneous.
For treatment of deficiency and in the absence of neurological involvement, the usual initial dose is 0.25 mg to 1 mg on alternate days for 1 to 2 weeks, followed by 0.25 mg weekly until the blood count is normal. The maintenance dose of 1 mg monthly is recommended.
In children with uncomplicated pernicious anaemia or defective absorption of Vitamin B12, a total of 1000 mcg to 5000 mcg given in divided dose of 100 mcg each over a period of two or more weeks will maintain remission.

Contraindications

Contraindications
Cyanocobalamin should not be given to patients without first confirming the diagnosis and should not be used to treat megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy.
